He was a good leader because he refused to comply with what was seen as normal. He had his own plans and he intended to be his own boss. He did not care that other people thought what he did was ugly just because they did not understand it, he used his art confidence to inspire others to be free and confident in their own work as opposed to conforming and flowing with the conventional ways of painting.

He wasn't. He was lucky. He met Gertrude Stein, and then she created the concept of the artistic genius. She then propagandized the concept, and transformed art, and the concept of genius, into an abstract commodity. Stein was very influential, and also had friends in influential places: working as reporters, and she created a publicity machine; to promote the concept of both genius and the "new." Which, because of the Industrial Revolution, enabled a huge wave of nouveau riche to be affected, who yearned to prove their societal superiority: to both the common man masses who had access to realistic movies and Photography, and the old world aristocracy who had access to realistic paintings. So, this neouveau riche bought both the concept of genius and the new: in an attempt to prove their superiority. All these forces worked together to enable Picasso to become a, kind of, cult hero, as he created the equivalent of a child's cartoon, which entertained the early 20th century aristocracy, and which has, now, become the majority.
