Reagan was born on February 6, 1911 in Tampico, Illinois. He worked at various jobs growing up. He had a reasonably happy childhood but the family was often short on money. He had an older brother who was not rally close. His father drank too much and had had little education. The family moved several times while the father looked for better jobs. He was taught to read by his mother when he was five. He attended local public schools. He then enrolled at Eureka College in Illinois where he played football and made average grades. He graduated in 1932.

Father: John Edward "Jack" Reagan - Shoe salesman.

Mother: Nelle Wilson Reagan. .
