The name Saturn is derived from the Roman god of agriculture and wealth Saturnus. According to Roman mythology Saturnus was the son of Caelus the god of sky and Terra the goddess of earth. He is the father of Jupiter the god of sky and Neptune the god of the sea. Saturnus was associated with agriculture and harvest and was believed to have taught humans the skills of farming plowing and sowing seeds. His festival Saturnalia was celebrated with great joy and feasting in December.
The Romans believed that Saturnus was the father of the human race so to honor him they gave Saturday the seventh day of the week his name. The Greeks who also worshiped Saturnus referred to him as Cronos. In English Cronos was translated as Chronos which was eventually changed to Saturn.
