The monadnock was formed 300 million years ago when hot liquid rock, called magma, approached the Earth's surface and later hardened.

Eventually the land on top of the rock eroded and left the top of the rock exposed.

Stone Mountain is located in Georgia and is a naturally occurring quartz monzonite rock. The sides of the mountain have Georgia oaks growing on them. The north face of the mountain has depictions of Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis carved into it.
