President Polk accused Mexico of killing Americans on American soil (Alamo) but actually all that was claimed by Mexico and under Mexican rule at the time. Either way Mexico was under it's own termoil and was divided and ol' Polk knew it. The time was right and he pretty much antagonized Mexico into a war they could not win. The mexicans were getting pounded after a while and called in their former (ousted) president general Santa Anna. Santa Anna had to trick Polk to get into Mexico for he was exiled in Cuba and had to go through American lines to get back in to Mexico. Long story short we stole it when Mexico had their pants down. They weren't stable enough to defend. Santa Anna was once again made out to be a failure even though he fought for a country that ousted him and it was decided we would give Mexico 15,000,000 dollars and we would get California and surrounding areas and Mexico would recognize the rio grande as the Texas border. Oh by the way that border was a major part of the war. Mexico was really going to leave us alone as long as we didn't push the Texas border to rio grande river. Of course we didn't care and that is how we stole Texas and California. I'm in class right now actually. Lol. You should look it up history is very interesting.
Texas was an independent country from the end of the Texas War for Independence from Mexico until 1845 when it became a state. The country was known as the Republic of Texas. Before that, it was a territory of Spain, France and Mexico. In 1861, Texas joined the Confederate States of America.
