Babylonia emerged when Hammurabi (1728 - 1686 BC) created an empire out of the territories of the former kingdoms of Sumer. Sumer was a city....that just grew and grew, and grew. They captured or took in other surrounding areas outside the city itself.

In religion, Sumerian religion refers to the mythology, pantheon, rites and cosmology of the Sumerian civilization. The Sumerian religion influenced Mesopotamian mythology as a whole, surviving in the mythologies and religions of the Hurrians, Akkadians, Babylonians, Assyrians, and other culture groups. In daily live, we know, for example, that in the 3rd century BC married couples often worked in two different temples or regions but found enough time to have families and lived together under one roof.
