In the Roman and Visigothic Periods, Cordoba was not terribly important.

In the Islamic Period, Cordoba was the capital of the Emirate of Cordoba and the later Caliphate of Cordoba. Those two states were among the most advanced states of their time and saw the height of the Islamic Golden Age. Scientific, mathematical, medical, and other discoveries were made. Beautiful architecture, like the Great Mosque of Cordoba, was built. New literary forms, historical analyses, and linguistic studies prevailed during this period.

In the latter half of the Islamic Period, Cordoba became an independent Taifa Kingdom or was relatively ignored by the invading Moroccan Islamic States (Almoravids and Almohads).

During the existence of Catholic Spain, Cordoba remained one of the most important and largest cities in the Andalucia region because of its population and its position on the Guadalquivir River.
