Bob was discovered by a man who worked for Colombia Records while playing in the coffee houses in Greenwich Village, New York. The man reportedly told Dylan that he "loved his sound" and that he should come down to Colombia and maybe worked out a record deal. His debut album with Columbia was titled Bob Dylan and all but two of the songs on the album were traditional folk songs. This album was released in 1962.

Where did the name Dylan originate from?

From the Welsh Poet Dylan Thomas. During his Dinkytown days, Zimmerman began introducing himself as "Bob Dylan". Dylan recalled: "What I was going to do as soon as I left home was just call myself Robert Allen ... It sounded like a Scottish king and I liked it." However, in reading Down Beat magazine, he discovered there was a saxophonist named David Allyn. Dylan adds, "I'd seen some poems by Dylan Thomas. Dylan and Allyn sounded similar. Robert Dylan. Robert Allyn. The letter D came on stronger."
