Feudalism consisted of a system of holdings or occupying of land(fiefs) by a vassal (subject) in return for that vassals' service to a Lord. These services included oaths of homage, goods paid in kind and military services. In return for these services the Lord promised to provide protection over the lands held by the vassal and aid. On breaches of these oaths the lord was entitled to take back the land.
In today's society, we may hold a house from a landlord which would be similar to the plot of land held by a vassal and although there are similarities in the sense that both the tenant and the Landlord would come to a series of arrangements (in the form of a contract) which both the Landlord and the tenant have to abide by. We are not asked to provide military service to the landlord or provide that landlord with aids (gifts of money.)
Feudalism is the structure of the government and part of the society. It is not a separate thing so in asking this question you are asking about a system that the knights were part of and created. Knights were nobles and a different class of people and were created because of feudalism.

Feudalism was a national economic organizational system. Anyone who lived in a feudal society contributed to feudalism in the same way that anyone who lives in a capitalist society contributes to capitalism.

feudalism is the way life worked in the middle ages
The way of life for much of the Middle Ages is called feudalism. Manorialism, which it is also called, is probably a better name because there is no really firm definition of what feudalism is.
