Actually, no one specific person came up with the idea of mythology. Story telling is a strong point of our culture, that is why we as humans have so many different varieties of stories, from the drowning of Osiris at the Nile, to the fox reaching for the cluster of grapes. Different people groups came up with their own special twists to add to myths, making the stories what they are today.

From what i know is that way back with the Greeks it started. they didn't know how thing happened and why they happened. so they decided they needed deities, gods) so they started praying to different made up gods and that where they get all the different ones. This is my best opinion.

A myth is a traditional story accepted as history; serves to explain the world view of a people. This is to say that a myth cannot be invented by a writer (that is called fiction). But writers like Hesiodos or Homer can write about the myths which already exist. ---- I don't believe that a myth is accepted by history. I don't think many people believe in Greek gods anymore, even the Greeks.
