What is the difference between a framed story and a straight line story?
A framed story is a story told by somebody. eg. the narrator is a real character telling the story to another character. In "Heart of Darkness" Marlowe tells his story to a group of sailors as they wait for the tide to turn. 'Frankenstein' is told by Dr. Frankenstein to the ship's captain as they are stuck in the arctic ice with nothing to do. The type of story has great freedom in giving flash-backs, explanations and even bouts of philosophizing. A straight-line story is told as if the story were happening 'at the moment'.

What is the story behind Emporia State University having a bell tower called Silent Joe?
Legend has it that back in the day Emporia was expecting to have an awesome undefeated football team and the tradition has been to always ring the bell after a victory. They predected a blow-out season and told people to start donating money to buy a new bell because the current one would be busted by mid-season. They ended up losing every game that season and the bell was nick-named "Silent Joe" as a result. They still ring the bell after each win and this last season they had a great season and we expect more great seasons from here on out.

Why was the story called 'The Soul of the Great Bell'?
This short story was written by an American-born author (Lafcadio Hearn) who fell in love with Asian culture and retold a number of Chinese and Japanese folk stories. In this one, the bell really does have a soul, as I will try to explain. The legend from hundreds of years ago tell us that an emperor in the Ming dynasty wanted a bell that would make beautiful and impressive sounds (ringing bells are a part of Buddhist, Shinto and Taoist religious practice). He found a crafstman to make it, and it was supposed to be made of gold, brass and silver, three metals that refused to get along or co-operate with each other, making the bell sound hollow. The emperor was angry and threatened to kill the craftsman. But he begged for one last chance to get it right. The craftsman had a beautiful and innocent daughter, and when she knew her father was in danger, she went to the astrologer for advice. She was told that only the blood of a young virgin girl would make the bell ring properly and make the various metals cooperate. His young daughter knew immediately what she had to do and she jumped into the kiln fire, killing herself but providing the ingredient needed to make the bell ring beautifully. (In Asian culture, sad to say, the lives of girls were not regarded as very important, so it is not surprising that the girl is willing to sacrifice her own life to make the bell ring beautifully and save her father's life.) And the soul of the bell is hers-- to this day, when the bell rings, it sounds as if it is saying her name.
