One of the slaves, Peter Prioleau, told his owner, Colonel John Prioleau, of the plot an investigation in early June led to the arrest of over 117 blacks, free and slave. Of those, 79 were tried before a special court and 69 were found guilty. Authorities banished 35 from the state and hanged 34, including Vesey. Vesey, who was executed on July 2, died without telling state leaders whether there had actually been a plot or not.
