There were three methods for cleaning up the spill. Burning, Mechanical Cleanup, and Chemical Dispersants. Burning could not work because of unfavorable weather. There was not enough wave action for the chemicals to clean up the spill. Mechanicul Cleanup worked but it was a slow process, because they did not have the necessary equipment in the first 24 hours.
The rupture of the tanks on the Exxon-Valdez caused huge oil slicks to get dumped in to the ocean. The oil clings to fish and birds, causing a massive die-off of marine life. The oil washed up on the beach and sticks to the rocks to this day. The spillage affected 1,900 km of coastline; loss of wildlife estimates were 250,000 seabirds, nearly 3,000 sea otters, 300 harbour seals, 250 bald eagles, up to 22 killer whales and billions of salmon and herring eggs.
== == Answer Just throwing this out there, but as of today (August 2008) you can still go out on some of the islands and run your hand along the ground, covering your hand in the oil that remains from 19 years ago.
They didn't clean it, but they acted like they did. They put people on the shore and steamed cleaned the beach. They had piles of dead animals and just carried them away after a time. If you walk one of the beaches today that was steamed cleaned you will still find oil. Turn over a rock or dig a bit in the sand and oil will be found. It is still in the ecosystem and will be for another 100 years.
