GPS was invented by American navy to know their exact location in open waters. it was first invented in 1960. this was done by putting 6 satellites in space thus can calculate the position using the longitude and altitude. to read more about its history and how it was improved please visit wikianswers.com and type in GPS for a start! GPS was a development of navigation systems that started with Radio direction finding (pre WWII), then LORAN (WWII), then Omega navigation system (VLF transmitters).
All these early systems relied on direction-finding to a known base station. The arrival of the first Sputnik, meant that as it passed overhead, its signal changed due to Doppler Shift. Eureka, we can accurately determine the position of the satellite by monitoring it, and by reciprocity, we can determine our position similarly!!!
NAVSTAR was an early sat-based system, and as atomic clocks became cheaper and satellites became more common, the Global Positioning System was developed, though originally, its potential precision was cloaked by military masking so that it was precise only for the military. Who knew the tricks of the masking. Arivee the first Desert War, and lots of soldiers took civilian GPS devices into the war with them, and soon the absurdity of the masking became apparent to the military. Fairly recently, the system abandoned the concept of masking, but because of this threat of loss of accuracy, civilian airliners do not formally rely on the GPS.
The Soviets have a GLONASS system almost compatible with GPS, and the EU is currently constructing a Galileo system with similar performance. The Chinese may follow.
The satellites are about the size of a pick-up and contain (among much else) an atomic clock, whose signal is cleverly modulated so that I can interpret the data where I am. The atomic clocks have to consider relativity due to their speed, and (smaller) gravity. Thank you USA!
A German firm called ublox has a most excellent set of info that you may download.

The gps was invented by the us department of defense. And it sucks its such a fail who even uses a gps common sense people i know i have some do you wasteyutes gtfo.
Blackline GPS was created in 2004.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) was created by the United States Department of Defense in 1960.
The U. S. military.
In 1983, the GPS ceased being solely a military system and was made available for public use.
Well, the name kind of gives it away - Global Positioning System. Much like everything to do with technology and computers, it was originally created for military purposes, in this case the U.S. military for positioning of troops, ships etc. Today it is still used for this, as well as for civil use. GPS is free to use for anyone with a GPS receiver.
