They compromised. The slave states could count the slave population towards representation in the house of representatives. However, a slave was only considered as 3/5ths of a white citizen. It is referred to as the "3/5ths Compromise".

The northern and southern states had two major disagreements at the convention. The North disagreed with the use of slaves, and the South disagreed how people were elected to office.
Constitutional Convention mainly suffered the three-Fifths Compromise. Competing interests were state's slaves, Presidential electors, and direct taxes.
