How was the column Marcus Aurelius built?

28 blocks of marble were put on top of each other. They were hollow and a had an internal stair which went all the way up to the top of the column. It was lit by mall slits through the surface. It rested on a base 10 metre high, 3 of which are now below ground level. The Romans developed cranes which were capable of lifting weights of 6 tonnes. For weights of up to 100 tonnes, they used wooden lifting towers. Columns were lifted through a frame inside the tower by captatans powered by humans or animals on the ground.
