The game of Chess has evolved in the past with similar games, but the most accepted theory is that it started back in India with Shaturanga.

It is thought to be invented in the sixth century AD and played with four players and with a dice on a chequered board with 64 squares.

During this century, it was modified to accept Hindu law. Gambling was forbidden so the use of dice was also forbidden. The four oppenents merged into two larger armies for two players. It was now Shatranj.

Once again, there are different theories into how Shatranj became the game of chess:

  • Saracens (Medieval Muslim Arabs) may have brought the game with them when they invaded Spain.
  • Charlemagne may have received a Shatranj set as a present from a Byzantine empress.
  • Knights may have brought the game back to Britain after the Crusades.
