Houses were heated by fireplaces located in the kitchens or main rooms. Other rooms generally didn't have heat unless the home was owned by a wealthy person who could afford fireplaces in rooms for heat.

As well, some farmhouses were built to corral farm animals on the main floor at night, and the people lived upstairs, benefiting from the natural rising heat provided by the animals.
