He used new practices of war. he invaded areas controlled by Athens which supplied lumber and silver. The old Spartan tactics called for direct engagement of soldiers. Pericles of Athens refused to meet the Spartan army in the open thus prolonging the war. Brasidas' invasions of the sister states of Athens brought a close to the war.

Was thucydides in the peloponnesian war?

Thucydides , 460 BC - c. 395 BC , may have been a participant in the Peloponnesian War, 431 to 404 BC . He claims that he was a participant but contracted the plague that devastated Athens and was exiled . It is highly improbable that he could have been witness to both Athenian and Spartan political dialogues/discourses .Another view:By his own account, Thucydides son of Oloros commanded part of the Athenian naval forces and was at Thasos in 424-423 BCE and was urgently called to help relieve the seige of Ampipholis in Thrace led by the Spartan Brasidas. He was too late and set about defending Eion, where he successfully turned back an attack by Brasidas. In Athens there was alarm at the loss and consequent local surge of support for Brasidas, and it appears Thucydides was made a scapegoat, as he ceased to be a general.

Could helots be hoplites?

The helots were an unfree population group that formed the main population of Laconia and the whole of Messenia (areas of Sparta).A hoplite was a citizen-soldier of the Ancient Greek City-states. Hoplites occasionally served with the Spartan army.Addition:Hoplites were armoured soldiers, so the Spartan infantry was comprised of hoplites. The Spartan helots (serfs) were used as light infantry and archers, however later during the Peloponnesian War (the force which Brasidas took north in 422 BCE were helot hoplites), and later when the ongoing wars had depleted the Spartan hoplite numbers, they expanded the use of helots as hoplites, often with the inducement of being freed of serfdom (being bound to their plot of land) after successful service.
