The New Model Army
Parliament needed to improve its New Model Army to enhance its effectiveness in the English Civil War against royalist forces. A well-trained and disciplined army was essential for maintaining control and demonstrating military strength, which was crucial for gaining support and legitimacy. Additionally, the New Model Army was intended to be a more organized and cohesive force compared to previous military efforts, allowing Parliament to better implement its strategic goals and adapt to changing battlefield conditions.

What were the tactics the 'New Model Army' used to win the English Civil War? The tactics employed by both sides during the Civil War were modeled on those used on the continent in the 'Thirty Years War' - with particular reference to the tactical doctrine of the army of Sweden. It was not, in truth, tactical superiority that won the war for the Parliamentarians, rather it was the superior discipline and organisation of the New Model Army. The Parliamentarian army of 1642 (the year the war began) reflected it's Royalist counterpart; generally poor training and discipline, inadequate logistical support and often insufficient or inappropriate equipment. The latter 'New Model Army' was an entirely different construct. The New Model Army was comprised of (relatively) well supported professional soldiers who were capable of executing complex battlefield maneuvers to a degree that entirely outclassed their Royalist opposites.
The New Model Army, organised by Oliver Cromwell, was a part of the Parliamentarian rebellion against the Royalists. The "old army", as you put it, did not answer to a Parliament - they were the Royalist army.
The name of his army was the New Model Army.
Red
During England's Civil War, Oliver Cromwell started the New Model Army to fight against the Royalists, who wore white hats. The New Model Army would attack the Royalist army from behind where the weakest soldiers were placed. When attacked the Royalists would run away. Hence, the term, "Run like a whitehead", had its beginning!
