When primitive man start trying to make melodies on whatever crude instrument he had, he probably played started with one pitch and worked his way up to five. It seems that the world over, the pentatonic scale is used. It probably is just a part of human nature. Humans seem to like the sound of the pentatonic scale the world over.

Who knows really how it was created. Nobody was there to report it in written form. Western music is the music that was first written down and by then we had the Church modes which is more advanced.

Blues is just a pentatonic with a flat five added and look how many folks love that.
