The emperor was the head of the government in postwar Japan. This was had assurance of the Japanese people and the US had to comply and helped create Japan's Constitution.

During World War 2, Japan had a militarized government, after the war the United states took control of Japan and turned them into a liberal democracy. Today Japan has a constitutional Monarchy.

The atomic age was born in the US with the Manhatton project; but matured in Japan, with it's use on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The cold war is the result of nuclear weapons. Japan is the birthplace of the cold war.
After World War II, the American military government of occupied Japan disbanded the Japanese armed forces as just one step in the post-war rebuilding of a peaceful, flourishing, renewed Japanese society. A further step was taken with the declaration of the permanent disarmament of Japan to be enforced by the American overseers.
The assumptions that social reforms and equality would flourish in post war Japan, have changed Japan from then to now in some small ways. The United States did try to democratize Japan, and this did work to some extent. Though Japan does meet the true justice system, since the war had ended, there is much room for improvement.
