old answer: Spanish were mean to indians improved answer: A leading figure in France in the 1600's was Samuel de Champlain. He made friends with a nearby Huron Indian tribe. He granted their request to fight alongside them in a battle with their enemies, the Iroquois. The French recruited Indians to help with the fur business, which was actually a hardship for the Indians who were subjected to the colonist's diseases and asked to do things that were against their religious beliefs. But nevertheless, the French and these Indians remained partners. When the Spanish came to the Americas, they too interacted with the Indians. One of the biggest effects of the Spanish-Indian interaction was the introduction of the horse to the Indian people. This was one of the only positive impacts of the interaction of the Spanish and the Indians. The term the "Black Legend" was created after the Spanish invaders killed, enslaved, and infected natives with disease. This was a more accurate description of the relations between the Indians and Spanish. British relations to the Indians can be summed up with the Anglo-Powhatan Wars, when the Indians were brutally defeated.

French relations with the Indians were much better when compared to the relationship that the Indians had with Britain and Spain. The Spanish were often cruel to Indians, they were treated harshly. While the British got along with the Indians at times, it did not last and the relationship quickly deteriorated.

Basically the French befriended the Native Americans by agreeing to fight alongside of them in exchange for assistance in fur trapping. French had better weapons to fight with and the Natives had a better understanding of the land and prosperous hunting spots.

The Spanish were primarily concerned with converting Natives to Christianity, where as the English were concerned partly with the idea of improving the life's of Natives by "encouraging" them to become more civilized, but in the end the British were really after the fertile land Native Americans inhibited. The British saw the potential for profit and justified the seizure of this land by stating that the Native Americans were wasting the full potential of the land because they refused to progress as a civilization by refusing to put into use modern technology, as well as taking part in the progressive agriculture market/trade

type industry that was starting to develop.

The French primarily traded with the Native Americans and earned their trust. The British tried to eradicate them or push them further west. It is not surprising that the only Native American Tribe that joined with the British in the Seven Years War was the Iriqouis-Haudenosaunee whereas every other Native American Tribe joined with the French. Anglo-Indian relations only improved when the United States became independent and a worse adversary for the Natives than the British had been.
