Santa Barbara was a Spanish colony with a mission and Chumash tribe living in the area along the coast and on the Channel Islands. There were 150 independent villages with a population of about 18,000. The mission and El Presidio was settled about 1780's and began an era of colonization and converting the Chumash to Christianity. The Spanish governed the area until 1822 when California became a Mexican territory. In 1846 the area was taken by John C Fremont for the United States. From 1830 on ranching and agriculture became strong. Horses, cattle, and community were focal points in this time.
