The division into three Estates was essentially French rather than European.

The FIRST Estate was the clergy. This is not a social class.

The SECOND Estate was the nobility. Qualification was by birth, not wealth, Some Nobles were immensely rich, some very poor indeed. However, they all felt superior to the lower-born. A few of these continue to exist today, but not in significant numbers.

The THIRD Estate was everybody else, from starving beggars to millionaire manufacturers.
