Until the Mongol Empire had fallen and released all its ties to the silk road, trading was very easily done. The Mongols would have checkpoints along the way and they would make sure that the travellers were safe. But when the empire fell, the road was unprotected of thieves, robbers, and other people with intentions of taking what wasn't rightfully theirs.
