First came the National Road which ran from Maryland to West Virginia.

Then the Erie Canal was built in 1825 to connect the Great Lakes to New York. This was a cheap and safe way for transporting goods, from the West to the East. The East was then known as the "center of commerce." The Erie Canal was bypassed by railroads in the 30's, and there were also the steamboats.
