Fairly well. Not well enough, of course, for feudalism to be the dominant type of government in the world. Feudalism worked with a king ruling over his barons, who ruled over his nobles, who ruled over his peasants.

Feudalism didn't protect the greater population of people. It made them into serfs to serve the needs of strong men who created armies and took land. Knights were a little more than gangs that pillaged, raped, and killed whole villages without consequences. It wasn't until the Catholic Church made them take an oath to behave and protect people under the threat of excommunication. It is only in the romantic stories of the 1800's that knights are valiant and noble. When a war was fought it was the serf who did the fighting and died by the thousands.

It gave a framework to the society where none had been. Everyone knew who had the power and how it was enforced. They knew where they fit and what to do.
