Feudalism had many purposes - protection & safety (through knights); wealth, money, income, crops, food, etc. for the Lords; security of their position for the vassals (and king) through the rigid social class system; and so forth.

When Rome fell it left a power vacuum and people were on their own. They were being attacked, enslaved, and killed by barbarian tribes and there was no one to protect them. Services were gone and there was no government. Feudalism is the answer when government services are gone and no one to protect you. Feudalism is when a strong man comes in and takes over. He forms an army and takes control making everyone slaves or to work for him. This is what happened in the middle ages.
