The goal of The Middle Ages is to help students understand the basic. The barbarian invasions, feudalism, the Crusades, the devastation of the plague.
Nearly all the histories I have read say that the Renaissance began before the Middle Ages ended, so there was some overlap. I think possibly all of them would have put 1454 into the Renaissance. The dates I have seen for the end of the Middle Ages range from 1400 to 1517. Most of them have been 1453, but a few have been 1492 or 1400. So some, but possibly not most, historians would put 1454 in the Middle Ages.

During the Middle Ages, artists were mostly independent craftsmen. This put them outside the much talked about structure of medieval social classes, which consisted of peasants, nobles, and clergy. Along with merchants, craftsmen were what we would call middle class, a group most medieval social theorists chose to ignore when they wrote about the structure of feudalism.

The Black Death was an outbreak of bubonic plague that happened in 1347 to 1352. This was a time that was before the end of the Middle Ages, but the Middle Ages and the Renaissance overlap to some extent, and many historians would put this after the Renaissance began. Also, the bubonic plague, or Black Death, returned many times after the Middle Ages, including during the Renaissance.
