A good deal of discrimination and resentment.

At first, their function was restricted to humble fatigues, which the white troops were glad of. Then the white rank-and-file found they could gain automatic promotion by volunteering to join black units, and so the blacks gradually gained more acceptance.

By the end, some black units had been sent out on operations, and acquired credibility.

The most controversial incident involving black troops was at Petersburg, in the Battle of the Crater, when a well-rehearsed black Division was forbidden at the last moment from going in, because Grant was sure the operation would fail, and that he would be accused of treating black troops as expendable. It was a disastrous decision, and it lenghtened the war by about nine months.

i dont think they could of served in the army because of all the racist things that were going on. but if they did they were treated like farts.
