According to the institute of Heraldry (from the U.S. Army) the RVN Gallantry Cross medals were awarded by the Vietnam Government to military members who were considered to produce gallant acts of valor or "displayed heroic Conduct." The medals were cited individually at different levels including: regiment, brigade, division, armed forces, or corps. The metal was established by decree 74b-Qt on August 15, 1950. In addition, the metal was established by decree number 96/DQT/HC on May 2, 1952. The U.S. Military were individually cited for the RVN award, but the Vietnamese government issued the award to all individuals that were involved with military assistance command (MACV) February 8, 1965 and March 28, 1973. Moreover, the U.S. Army Vietnam units for the time frame of July 20, 1965 through March 28, 1973. This allows any military personnel who served to wear the RVN gallantry cross.
