A yeoman was a free man who owned his own farm.
There were different definitions of yeoman. One type of yeoman was a servant in the royal household, with a implication of readiness for military duty. Another was a small land owner, having perhaps 30 to 120 acres of land; again the definition included readiness for military duty, and this was defined by law. The Assize of Arms of 1252 required a yeoman to have a longbow, sword, and dagger. It appears that as a small landowner, the yeoman could be a farmer, but could also get income from his land by renting to someone else.
A yeoman was an an attendant in a noble household. Later, the term was used for a farmer who owned his own land.
Church, noble, peasant, serf.
The term peasant encompassed a number of different types, including freemen, villeins, cottars, bordars, serfs, and slaves. The link below goes to an article on serfdom, and to the section of the article describing the various types of peasants. Unfortunately, the term serf is used in the article to mean peasant, in some places, and a peasant who is bound to the land, in others.
The planters had large plantations and were rich and the yeoman had small farms and were poor.
A peasant was a small farmer, who might be a serf, a free tenant, or even a yeoman who had his own land. A serf was usually a peasant, but not always. A serf bound to a manor, and was not free to leave it. Aside from being a farmer, serf could also be a laborer of some type. So many peasants were serfs, and most serfs were peasants.
