Some fleet carriers (battle carriers) were used in the Atlantic, such as the USS Wasp, USS Ranger, etc. primarily to support ground landings and hunt submarines. However, the escort carriers did most of the sub hunting.
As fleet carrier losses piled up in the Pacific, the USS Wasp had to be transfered to the Pacific, where she was later sunk by a Japanese submarine. The USS Ranger was considered to weak to be sent to the Pacific, and continued to work the Atlantic Theater.

Even if you exclude the smaller aircraft carriers in World War 2, there were still many more than 5 or 6. The US Navy commissioned 23 aircraft carriers of the Essex class during the war, not to mention others in US service, and those used by the British and Japanese navies.
The Japanese lost a total of 27 aircraft carriers....I could list them all but take my word for it you dopes!!....the "Japs" had 3 that were under construction at the end of the war.....you dopes!...hahahah!!...
The main carriers used in the Mediterranean were HMS Eagle, Argus, Furious, Ark Royal, Illustrious, Formidable, Victorious and Indomitable. The USS Wasp was also used to ferry aircraft to Malta twice. This does not include the smaller escort carriers. Italy was building carriers but none were finished.
US Navy Aircraft Carriers normally operated US Navy aircraft flown by US Navy pilots; however sometimes during WW2 these aircraft carriers had US Army Air Force or US Marine Corps aircraft on-board to be flown-off by Army or Marine pilots. This was for ferrying operations. These aircraft would take off from the carriers but land on an airfield. Army pilots were not trained to land on carriers, neither were the Army aircraft equipped for carrier landings. US Marine pilots & Marine aircraft could operate from carriers if necessary, until they could be established at an airfield.
Some flew some by ship as cargo or on aircraft carriers
Aircraft carriers are a long range striking arm of a naval air force. Used properly they can decimate enemy fleets as the US carrier fleet did at Midway to the Japanese. In the Atlantic, British aircraft carriers were decisive to hunting down German ships. Not having aircraft carriers was possibly one of the biggest mistakes for the German navy.
There are aircraft carriers all over the world. America has about 16 of various types. Many other countries also have aircraft carriers.
I know the United States has 9 aircraft carriers. Rest of the world??
The Secret World of Aircraft Carriers - 1999 was released on: USA: 14 June 1999

Navy bases around the world.
Aircraft carriers were invented so the products could be transported across the world quicker, because plane is the quickest mode of transport in the world. I ;)
The Essex class of the US Navy were the largest carriers in WW2.
