Prior to the Permian mass extinction amphibians were a lot more diverse. They were large and small and were at one time, the dominant land animals. Some were large and hunted down smaller animals and others were small and/or herbivorous. The Permian mass extinction which destroyed around 90% of land life greatly reduced this diversity, and amphibians from then on were small and occupied fewer ecological niches.
