Calls on the first phones were nothing like today. Phones in the beginning were two way lines. Predesignated locations A and B. You would turn a crank much like on a Jack In The Box toy. The crank sent an electrical charge that sent the charge to the other phone causing a bell to ring. You would have to crank over and over until a person answered on the other end.
