The slave trade in 17th, 18th and 19th century was an awful practice. Africans brought to America as slaves were given a shoddy treatment. Living conditions were harsh on plantations where these people were kept and were more often than not exposed to violence. They had no rights and remunerations were either small or non existent. However, a small number of slaves were known as house slaves who were privileged to live with their white masters and were given better living conditions and treatment compared to others.

Slavery first reached the New World in 1619 when a Dutch slave trader sold Native Africans to English settlers at the Jamestown settlement in Virginia. This marked the beginning of a system of chattel slavery that would expand throughout the American colonies. The introduction of enslaved Africans significantly impacted the economy and social structure of the region.

After enslaved Africans reached the colonies, all of them were taken to slave markets and sold to new owners. After that, the picture changes on how they were treated. There is a quote, "There are different degrees of slavery, when you are free, you are free." Every story you hear about how slaves were treated is true. Some were beaten. Some were nearly starved. Some were forced to work in brothels. Some lived quite well. The planters on the Carolina coast would leave the Gulahs to run the plantations. Meanwhile, the planters would spend May through September in Rhode Island. The slaves did as they liked. They did not run away. So, you had people living in total degredation and some living in better conditions. Most lived in between. While some even lived better than some of the white people in the community, none lived as well as their owners.
When Columbus visited the Americas, he thought he had reached Asia.
Hudson never reached the Americas.
