How were manor self sufficient?

Manors were self sufficient because they would only grow enough food to feed the manors people. They were not real interested in the trade systems and would only provide for itself. Perhaps on good years of growing and raiding, the monarch would decide to hold trade with another manor, going through the exact same conditions. Such times were rare, and so ignored for the production of good food and cattle to feed and grow the area.
