The manner in which Islands are and have been formed are as diverse and unique in many cases as the Islands themselves. As per the catagorisation of this question however, the Cayman Islands were formed by convergent tectonic plate movement. Geographically speaking they sit on the egde of the Cayman Trench. It is a trench hundreds of miles deep that runs between the Cayman Islands and Cuba.

Further eleaboration would require a more specific focus as some Islands are formed due to volcanic activity, some are man made...etc.
