Well what we call 'The Natural Numbers' kind of always existed. All civilisations have had numbers and maths. What changed over the years is the representations, the Romans used roman numerals like XLCVIII, the ancient Aztecs used knots in string. The digits we use today 0,1,2 etc. are known as Arabic numerals which, confusingly, originated in India about 2300 years ago.

The origin of numbers can be traced back to ancient civilizations, with different cultures developing their own number systems. The Sumerians and Babylonians developed a base-60 number system, while the ancient Egyptians used a base-10 system. The concept of zero and the decimal system were later introduced by Indian mathematicians. These early number systems laid the foundation for the development of mathematics as we know it today.
