As I understand it a person is born into their cast (they inherit their cast designation from their parents). However it is the karma of your previous lives that determines which parents you are to be bone unto. I also understand that you cannot change you cast during your current life (and it is sin/bad karma to try). I have always found that this view makes the Hindus I have known very fatalistic.
