Today, hogs are raised in various ways. There are actually what people would call "range hogs" or "free range pigs" being raised today. The pigs live outdoors in a pasture. These hogs have an area or areas where they can take shelter, get water and be fed grains. The pigs may roam in and out of this area at will. There are also, hogs being raised in confinement. These pigs do not roam. Generally, they each have individual space where they eat, drink and sleep. It helps the pig reproduce more efficiently. The offspring is more likely to survive to maturity. Hog production, ultimately for pork consumers, has undergone many changes. When hogs were raised by Pioneers, they were often wanderers and foraged for themselves. This meant that the hog was lean or fat depending upon what they found to eat and in what quantity. Some hogs were kept in pens and fed grain and "slops". These were generally large and rounded by the time they were slaughtered. Now, hogs are raised to be lean. Their bodies are longer and not as wide when viewed from the rear. They are fed grain and no slops.
Range Hogs ( not Western motorcyclists) may be derived from wild pigs called Boars or Javelina. The Razorback trucking company had one on their logo with the slogan, Raring to Go! Razorback. These were originally WILD animals and maybe this is a reinforcement for the phrase Hog Wild! ( they went Hog Wild on sports cars!)
Normally, chickens can fly. Naturally raised, not scientifically bred chickens fly. Today's commercially raised chickens are bred for large breasts and small wings and therefore aren't able to fly. They are simply too heavy for the wingspan.
Pigs originally resided in parts of Europe and Asia, and were domesticated as early as 9000 years ago. Since then, humans have kept pigs as livestock and companion animals and wherever people have moved to, they have taken pigs along. Today, wild and feral pigs live all around the world, and can even be found on many remote Pacific islands. Their resourcefulness and adaptability means they thrive in a range of habitats, including: Grasslands Wetlands Forests Savanna
