Schools began in the colonial towns and cities in 1635, and were very different from schools today. For the most part schools taught math and reading and the children were not in class all the time. Depending on the area all ages could be in one class. There was no high school so few students went further than 6th grade. Many entered apprentice contracts to learn a trade, some stayed with the family farm to help the parents, and all had chores to do at home. Even the youngest child had a job to do at home. Girls often married at a young age (13) with a much older man who had made arrangements with the parents to marry. The purpose of education in the 1700's was to ensure that people spoke English, could do basic math, and understood the government. A large percentage of the population were from European countries (1830 NYC had a nonEnglish population of 60%) and needed to understand how to vote and what was required to live in a democracy. Today education has expanded to include all aspects of learning and to prepare them for the future. Most of us would have a hard time living in the 1700's because it is so different from our world today and the schools reflect the changes.

In colonial times women especially had different clothes. For example they wore bonets, and had petticoats and occasionally hoop skirts. They were dressed WAY fancier than we are today. And I for one am glad that we don't have to wear that stuff anymore. That would have been a real hassel.
