Slaves were prohibited from acquiring any power through a series of actions. First of all, it was illegal to teach a slave to read. This made it extremely difficult to acquire information that could be used to assess their options. Secondly, Slave Codes gave masters absolute dominion over their slaves, including life and death. Finally, institutions such as the Supreme Court declared slaves were not citizens and only ⅗ the worth of a white man. In addition, they were considered â??propertyâ?? not human beings.
