The most used punishment for minor offences was attaching the soldier in question to a fixed object, like a pole, for up to 2 hours a day, for a maximum of 21 days. This was reffered to as "Field Punishment N° 1". Often the punished ones were faced towards the enemy line, most of the times out of shooting range, but not all the time.

An earlier punishment by flogging had been earlier abolished within the British Army in 1881.

The punishment for major offences & cowardice was death by firing squad.
