They both came to a new place to live; the immigrant to join an existing society, and the colonist to either start a new society in a new place where there was no other society, or to exist side by side with another existing society while developing their own new society, or to exist side by side and ultimately replace or subjugate an exiting society. Most colonists came to places where there were already existing societies of people.
