In general, it is more difficult to be a poor person in a poor society, than it is to be a poor person in a prosperous society, because poor societies do not have the resources to offer very much help to their poor members, and prosperous societies do. Hence, the Great Depression had a bad effect on poor people, even aside from the fact that it caused many previously prosperous people to become poor. If this is not sufficiently informative, there is a wealth of literature dealing with this subject. Try reading "The Grapes Of Wrath" by John Steinbeck.
