Perhaps the best thing to know about the Storming of the Bastille is that they were a faceless, nameless and forgetable mass of people variously estimated at between a thousand and as high as seven thousand people. Were they a mob or an organized protest march, a block party run amok, looters, a riot, a drunken herd. All of the above rolled into one seems likely. Certainly there had to have been some serious minded patriots among them. Camille Desmoulins a politician and journalist is most often named as a prime mover in the event. The vast majority will forever be nameless.
