Many things contributed to the loss of the British.

1- They were frighting in foreign territory. They were greatly disadvantaged by this, as the American colonists knew the land fairly well.

2- They had to ship supplies from England. This would take months, and while they had more and better supplies than the American colonists, it took them a long time to receive them.

3- The American Colonists were fighting for something they felt strongly about. Their freedom depended on the outcome of the war.

American Colonists also used Guerrilla Warfare, (They picked this up from Native Americans) something the British had never seen. Guerrilla Warfare consisted of " ambushes, sabotage, raids, the element of surprise, and extraordinary mobility to harass a larger and less-mobile traditional army, or strike a vulnerable target, and withdraw almost immediately." -(Definition from Wikipedia.)

This new style of fighting was foreign to the British, and was a great help towards the American win.

How did the aid of the french benefit the colonist?

As England was a world power at that time the American colonists needed assistance in tying up the British sea power because, after all, Britannia rules the waves. The French did this quite handily and were able to harrass the British shipping routes. They were able to run the British blockade to bring the colonists much needed aid. This worked out well for the French because they were able to maintain a presence on the world stage. France also had colonies in the New World as well i.e. the Louisiana territory with cities such as New Orleans and St. Louis.
