in the late 1830's dickens was referred by a friend to Alex Lancastle who published his books for him. Alex Lancastle was an openly gay man and suffered from syphilis and had his genitals amputated to stop the spread of gangrene. Alex was a controversial personality believed by many to be insane although despite this did a sterling job of publishing Dickens work.
